Leadership & Teaching

Why Leadership and Teaching Matter for Future PAs

Leadership and teaching are qualities that physician associates use daily in clinical practice. Whether it's leading a care team, educating patients, or mentoring future healthcare professionals, these skills demonstrate initiative, communication, and accountability. PA programs look for applicants who can step into these roles confidently.

What is Leadership?

Leadership is more than holding a title. It's about responsibility, initiative, and impact. A strong leader:

  • Organizes people or resources towards a goal.

  • Support team efficiency and morale.

  • Acts as a role model and sets the standard for others.

Tips & Considerations

  • Aim for 1-3 meaningful leadership experiences, rather than a specific number of hours.

  • Quality matters more than titles.

  • Reflect on how you motivated others, solved problems, or improved a process.

Common Leadership Roles

  • Executive board or officer positions in student organizations (President, Treasurer, etc.).

  • Committee leads or coordinators.

  • Team captain in athletics or recreational clubs.

  • Supervisor or trainer at work.

What is Teaching?

Teaching is the ability to share knowledge in a way that others can understand and apply. Strong teachers:

  • Adapt to their audience, adjusting their approach depending on the student's background, knowledge level, or learning style.

  • Communicate clearly.

  • Encourage critical thinking.

  • Show patience and foster a supportive environment.

Tips & Considerations

  • Aim for 1-3 meaningful teaching experiences, rather than a specific number of hours.

  • Choose opportunities where you can explain complex concepts or adapt to different learners.

Common Teaching Roles

  • Academic tutor (peer tutoring, private tutoring).

  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader or lab teaching assistant.

  • Mentor roles (peer mentor, big/little programs).

  • Training new employees at work.

  • Leading skill-based trainings or info sessions.

  • Coaching in athletics.

Things to Consider with Leadership & Teaching Roles

RELEVANCE

Leadership and teaching don't have to be medical-related; admissions committees value transferable skills.

COMMITMENT

Sustained involvement carries more weight than a short-term title.

IMPACT

Focus on what you accomplished and the impact it holds.
